Friday Night Dance Party/NXNE: Bloodgroup

Toronto – It looks like Iceland has decided to join the electro dance pop movement. Bloodgroup is a band consisting of people named “Lilja, Janus, Ragnar, Hallur, Styrmir”. Cool. I don’t really know much about them, as they don’t have anything other then a myspace page and I don’t like myspace pages. Their music is more darker European robo late night drunk and on E electro then the Aussie 80s summery sipping pina coleda electro, but it’s still all good.

They will be at El Mocambo as part of the Musebox showcase on June 18th.

20 Big NO’s for a Dance Party

Dance party, the magical place to get you on with life. It’s so much fun to be there and all of us gear up at the mention of a dance party.

So…What all happens when you go to a dance party? Dancing, eating, drinking and bitching! Who are the people most bitched about? Any guesses? The obvious answer is the people who reach the ceiling of disasters! Now don’t be scared of going to a dance party. Tag on to the following twenty no’s to be the rock star of party:

Be on guard with length: Don’t wear too short dresses to avoid that itchy look each time you are noticed.

Give a chance to others as well to communicate with the DJ. All songs of your choice will certainly freak others out.

Don’t jump like a pig on food.

It’s too bad to be a chipku. Don’t force yourself on others, be a part of a group that accepts you happily.

Letting the Freudian slip work might land you in trouble. Keep your tongue in control! Remember think before you speak.

Don’t show that you are desperate by asking someone again and again for dancing. Once is enough to make you see the mirror.

Chatting and talking is any day better than dancing like a maniac. If you don’t know how to dance indulge in other stuff rather than making a fool of yourself.

Drink sensibly. Going haywire with your senses will invite lots of negative comments.

Stay away from dark. Footing in dark corners will make you the centre of dark conversations!

Comfortable shoes. If you want to walk comfortably with beautiful clear feet next day after the party, then ensure ease for your feet in party heels.

Watch your inners. Light coloured, especially white inners will publicize your assets when florescent lights will sneak on them. You certainly don’t want it.

Carry accessories. Untied hair at times make you beast while dancing. Don’t forget to carry clips to retain that angelic charm.

Oily makeup. Face smudged with makeup will speak of the entire party’s on goings. Make it a secret and wear oil free make up for the party.

Body odour. You will be the only person dancing on the floor if you will start stinking after a couple of hours. Keep a check on your odour and use a fragrance whenever possible.

Observe the theme. Imagine everyone dressed in black and you solitary princess in pink. Oh what a nightmare! To prevent it from happening in real confirm the theme and dress accordingly.

Choose your company wisely. At a party, where there are risks every minute, be in a certified good company of friends who would help you in trouble.

Don’t be the last one to leave. The person who goes in the last takes all the blames with him. Try to leave when you notice the party being wrapped up to avoid the last minute hassles.

Avoid brawls. Think of waking up in a police station after a hard blow from someone. Obviously you don’t want this. Try to maintain calm in worse of situations.

Don’t be shy in letting out your discomfort. Your shyness might encourage wrong doers. The moment you notice some misconduct, call up for help immediately.

Control your puffs. Don’t irritate people by smoking too much. If you are too much in love with smoking then remember to look for the smoke zone!

Who said dance party is a tough place to handle? Just take care of these little things and get set go and hit the floor hard!

Electronic Dance Music 101 with The Scenestress

Everybody has their favorite watering hole, their go-to juke joint -- a spot where the barkeep knows your name, the faces are familiar and a good time is guaranteed. My list is rather lengthy these days; still, a couple places hold an extra-soft spot in my partyin' heart.

The Tavern on Main (1507 Main St., Sarasota 34236) is one such establishment. After a good deal of TLC and rebranding pains (I first knew it as The Box Social and later The Blue Owl), it's emerged as a sumptuous craft beer bar in the heart of downtown. Whether you want trivia, karaoke, a dirt cheap happy hour, dance-worthy live bands or DJs, the Tavern incorporates it all into their weekly rotation. They attract a delightfully mixed crowd of suds-loving patrons, so on most of my visits I get to catch up with old friends while meeting somebody new (and quite likely interesting, too).

I dropped by on Friday to root for DJ Imminent in an electronic dance music face-off, the fourth in a genre-bending series that pops up at the Tavern every other week. Four DJs attempt to win the crowd in alternating sets of hip hop, rap, dubstep and trap, with all kinds of subgenres and live freestyling thrown in for good measure. This week they'd added audience participation into the mix with a text-to-vote system. Would SkyCam and his crowd-pleasing trap stay on top as the reigning champions? I didn't even know what "trap" was, but I was about to get a formal education.

I caught the end of Imminent's set, laden with a lot of smooth, old-school hip hop---a terrific way to warm up the evening. Johnny Speed jumped up on stage next and started pumping the room full of an aggressive beat. Groups of people came drifting through the doors as if drawn by the heavily rolling pulse.

"What is this?" I quizzed Imminent and MajorRag3r, the DJ on deck (and the evening's purveyor of dubstep).

Through clouds of raspberry menthol vapor from MajorRag3r's e-cigarrette, they patiently elucidated the differences between the genres du jour: rap is all about the ego; moombahton carries the unmistakeable reggaeton beat; dubstep has the dirty, gnarly "whomp;" trap is all dressed up for the club, with sparse vocals, pretty synths and heavy beats. They tossed a lot of acronyms around---EDM, DNB, BPM---until my head began to spin like one of Immi's vinyls. "Relax," he told me with a grin, "you'll know it when you hear it."

I prodded the undefeated SkyCam for his secret to success while he patiently waited for his turn at the laptop. "I keep winning because they always make me go last, and everybody likes trap," he admitted with a modest tug on his black baseball cap. "I think tonight I'm going to try to lose on purpose."

I'll never know if SkyCam got his wish. Around 12:30 the crowd started playing hard-to-get, and in a blink of an eye, the place was nearly empty. Instead of sticking around for the moment of truth, I opted for a cliffhanger ending: trap and hip-hop were neck and neck in the polls, with a smattering of votes for dubstep and even fewer for rap---despite Immi's slick freestyling technique. Apparently, no one has ever voted for rap at one of these things before.

"That's all right," Imminent said, raising his microphone in a toast, "keep it classy, Sarasota." Will do. With beat-smiths like these, it's easy.

Skrillex Hits The Wilma Theatre

At the end of electronic musician Skrillex’s pummeling dance throb, “Rock and Roll (Will Take You To the Mountain),” a whining voice barks out, “You have technicians here making noise. No-one is a musician, they’re not artists because nobody can play the guitar.” It’s one of the few intelligible phrases in the song – or, for that matter, on Skrillex’s entire recent EP, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.”

If your definition of musicianship demands proficiency on the guitar – or any other instrument that existed prior to about 2005 – then next week’s local concert by Skrillex and a handful of other dance-music producers of his ilk probably won’t turn your crank.

But if your mind is open to new definitions of music in this new millennium, then get down to the Wilma on Wednesday to hear one of today’s trickiest electronic-music trailblazers crank up the jams.

Known to his mother as Sonny Moore, Skrillex burst onto the electronic music scene in 2007, after making something of a name for himself as lead singer with the Southern California post-hardcore band From First to Last, which appeared on two Vanns Warped Tours and released a couple of albums on the Epitaph label. At the time, Moore’s leap to the electronic music scene seemed perhaps a little convenient, as he had developed problems with his vocal cords.

But with the release of his 2010 debut EP, “My Name is Skrillex,” it was apparent that Moore had found his groove. By the end of the year, he had signed a deal with Mou5trap Records, the imprint run by electronic music guru DeadMau5.

Since then, the world has seemed to bounce to his beats. “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” debuted at number 1 on iTunes’ dance music chart in December; one of his tunes has already made its way into popular culture as the soundtrack on television commercials for the videogame, “Mortal Kombat 9.”

Looking like a height-challenged Geddy Lee, the long-haired, bespectacled Moore cuts a profile that is a far cry from the larger-than-life presence – and larger-than-love hooks – of DeadMau5.

But in between the occasional stage-dives, Moore gets busy blowing minds via aggressive dance mixes layered so deep with odd sounds, it’s hard to tell if you’ve heard any of them before. And just when you start to get your mind wrapped around it all, he busts out one of his signature breakdowns – extended riffs that sound like a building collapsing in perfect rhythm.

The effect is jarring and jaw-dropping, whether you’re listening intently or just trying to keep your knees bouncing to the beat.

So moan about the demise of instrumental music if you must. Skrillex is already moving on to the next groove.
